Fresh From The Spring: Meinindex Sustainable Water

Monday, 30 September 2024 Reading time : 3 minutes

From the morning shower to freshly washed clothes and the coffee machine - not only our morning routine, but our entire everyday life would be unthinkable without running water. But how does the wet element get into our taps and what happens as soon as it flows down the drain? Flow control devices are indispensable for the water supply.

The water's journey to us begins at the waterworks, where raw water is taken from natural sources such as rivers, lakes, or groundwater. This is where flow control devices such as pumps and valves are utilized. Pumps transport the water from the source to the waterworks. Valves regulate the flow and ensure that the water is distributed optimally in the various treatment stages, such as filtration, disinfection, and chemical treatment. Flow meters monitor the volume of water entering the waterworks and passing through the individual treatment processes.

Once the purification process is complete, the purified water is then fed into the municipal water supply system. Alongside public utilities, there are companies like American Water Works, the largest publicly traded water and wastewater company in the US, that provide these services. Here, flow regulators ensure that water reaches our homes in an efficient and reliable manner. In the main pumping stations, the water is pumped through the pipe network using powerful pumps. Pressure regulators ensure that water pressure remains constant and is adapted to the needs of consumers. Valves and distributors direct the flow of water to the various parts of the supply network. The American company IDEX Corp. offers a range of specialized flow meters and pumps.

In the home, various flow regulators are responsible for directing and regulating the water to the respective points of consumption. House connection pumps ensure that water reaches the upper floors of residential buildings with sufficient pressure. Heating and cooling systems also employ pumps and valves to distribute water for heating and air conditioning. Georg Fischer AG, headquartered in Schaffhausen, is well-positioned to meet this domestic demand. The Finnish subsidiary Uponor offers a comprehensive range of solutions for infrastructure and real estate, including climate control, hygienic water supply, and water distribution.

Once it has been used, the wastewater is routed through an extensive network of sewers and pipes back to the waterworks, where it is treated again. Wastewater pumps are used to transport wastewater from households to treatment plants. Check valves prevent wastewater from flowing back into the fresh water system. Ecolab Inc. is a global leader in water, hygiene, and energy technologies. Its technologies play a pivotal role in conserving water resources and enhancing the efficiency of cleaning processes.
