Chip Shortage: High imbalance of supply and demand

Wednesday, 13 October 2021 Reading time : 4 minutes

High imbalance of supply and demand
ZKB Asset Management has selected 22 stocks, which benefit from a currently strong excess demand for semi-conductors (chip shortage).

After a slump due to the Covid 19 pandemic, demand for semiconductors coming from automotive sector is surg-ing. At the same time, semiconductors demand for de-vices such laptops and smartphones continues to grow strongly due to home offices. On the supply side, there have recently been shortages due to factors such as the trade disputes between the USA and China, various weather phenomena (e.g. drought in Taiwan, extreme cold snap in Texas), a factory fire in Japan and the block-ade of the Suez Canal, which further accentuated the shortage. Semiconductor manufacturers are ramping up their capacities, but it will take some time before this leads to relief in chip shortage. The situation in the auto-motive sector is particularly stretched as some production facilities recently had to shut down. This offers a tremen-dous pricing power (price increase of 10%-15% in Q1 2021) along the whole value chain in the semiconductor industry and represents the main driver for further price potential.
