Sponsors Discover the Potential of Women in Elite Sports

Tuesday, 1 July 2025 Reading time : 3 minutes

On Wednesday evening, the opening match of the Women's European Football Championship will kick off at St. Jakob Park in Basel, with the teams from Switzerland and Norway set to play in front of a sold-out crowd.

Tickets for the tournament are in high demand, with advance sales exceeding those for the last tournament in England in 2022. "Twenty-two of the 31 matches are already sold out, with a total of 600,000 tickets sold – and that's without an opening match at Old Trafford or a final at Wembley Stadium," said Nadine Kessler, UEFA Director of Women's Football, a few days before the tournament begins.

However, full stadiums, rising spectator numbers and growing media coverage are evident not only in women's football. Management consultancy Deloitte predicts that global revenues in women's elite sport will rise to over USD 2.35 billion by 2025, up from just under USD 700 million in 2022. Basketball is likely to remain the sport with the highest revenue (44%), followed by football (35%). Moreover, the Women's Rugby World Cup, which is set to take place in England this autumn, has already in December been confirmed as the fastest-selling edition of the tournament ever.

"The commercial appeal of women's sports and its athletes has never been higher," says Deloitte analyst Jennifer Haskel. Sponsors also recognise this potential. According to a study by the sports data platform Sponsor United, they have increased their commitment to professional women's sports by more than 20% in 2024 year-over-year. This equates to over 5,500 sponsorship agreements being made worldwide during this period.

Sports equipment manufacturers have traditionally been particularly supportive of female athletes, with Nike and Adidas being considered leaders in this field, according to sports rights marketing company Sportfive. However, Sponsor United's analysis shows that companies across a wide range of sectors, including finance, food and technology, are reaping the benefits of their involvement in women's elite sport.

The range of sponsors for this year's Women's European Football Championship in Switzerland is also diverse. International sponsors include French insurance group Axa, Dutch brewer Heineken, and German car manufacturer Volkswagen.
