Data Centres: The Backbone of Artificial Intelligence

Thursday, 26 June 2025 Reading time : 2 minutes

As artificial intelligence (AI) advances rapidly, so does the demand for high-performance data centres. These centres play a crucial role in storing, processing and analysing the vast quantities of data essential for AI applications. Generative AI models based on deep learning require substantial computing resources. These models are trained using huge data sets, which requires robust solutions for data storage and management. According to an analysis by market researcher Fortune Business Insights, demand for data centres is likely to continue growing in the coming years. The global data centre market is expected to more than double in size, growing from just under USD 243 billion in 2024 to over USD 584 billion in 2032.

To ensure that high-performance computers run smoothly, a wide variety of components must work together in the background. Data centre suppliers play a key role here, providing a reliable and efficient power supply and distribution system, operating backup systems, and offering solutions for optimal room climate control. Companies such as ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens seem to be well positioned to benefit from the AI boom.

ABB has established itself as a key supplier to data centre operators in recent years. According to Reuters, orders related to data centres increased by an average of 23% between 2019 and 2023. Last year, this business accounted for around 15% of the Electrification division's revenue, up from 8% in 2022. ABB is also developing cooling systems designed to reduce energy consumption in data centres.

Demand for data centres and network infrastructure is also boosting Schneider Electric's business. Last December, the French electrical equipment manufacturer announced a collaboration with US industry leader Nvidia to develop designs for data centre cooling systems. Schneider Electric expects the AI boom to continue driving growth in the coming years. The company expects the Data Centres & Networks segment to grow by 10% or more annually until 2027, driven by AI applications. Broken down by end markets, the segment currently accounts for around a quarter of the company's business.

German technology group Siemens is also benefiting from the AI boom. In 2024, the company recorded a 31% year-on-year increase in orders for its electrification products. Large orders from data centre operators were among the factors contributing to this, according to Siemens.
