Global dividends reached a record high in the second quarter, rising 5.8% year-on-year to USD 606.1 billion, according to the latest dividend report from Janus Henderson Investors. Growth was broad-based globally, with 92% of companies either increasing or maintaining their payouts.
Alphabet and Meta Platforms paid dividends for the first time in their history. Although the payouts are small relative to their respective profits, the total dividend payout from the two tech giants is a whopping USD 3.8 billion. At sector level, financials are among the main contributors to dividend growth. The communications & media sector has also seen high growth rates as a result of the inclusion of Alphabet and Meta Platforms.
Janus Henderson Investors expects shareholders to continue to enjoy high dividends and is raising its forecasts for the current year. The company estimates that corporates will pay out a total of USD 1.74 trillion in 2024. This represents an increase of 4.7% compared to 2023 (previously: +3.9%).
