E-Mobility: Investment Opportunity Despite Headwinds

Monday, 10 November 2025 Reading time : 4 minutes

Over the past five years, electromobility has evolved from a niche sector to an integral part of the global automotive industry. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global electric car sales reached 17 million in 2024, marking a surge of over 25% compared to the previous year. China remains the undisputed leader in electric mobility, accounting for almost two-thirds of global sales with over 11 million electric cars sold.

Progress in e-mobility is crucial to achieving climate targets. Since the transport sector is responsible for a significant proportion of global CO₂ emissions, switching to zero-emission vehicles is essential for achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. The rapid spread of electric cars is already impacting global fossil fuel consumption. In 2024, the global electric car fleet comprised almost 58 million vehicles — over three times more than in 2021. The IEA calculates that this development reduced oil consumption by more than one million barrels per day in 2024; in return, however, electricity demand is increasing.

Nevertheless, the electric transition has recently stalled. Climate policy has taken a back seat in the face of a multitude of global crises. In Europe, for example, electric car sales stagnated in 2024 as subsidies were reduced or abolished altogether in key markets such as Germany and France. In the US, sales figures continued to rise, albeit at a much slower pace than in previous years.

Despite economic and political uncertainties, demand for electric cars is expected to grow. The IEA forecasts a further 25% rise in global sales in 2025, which would exceed the 20 million vehicle mark for the first time.

For investors looking to participate in the development of electromobility, the ZKB tracker certificate on an EV battery basket provides easy access to this investment theme. The basket comprises companies active along the entire electric vehicle value chain. These include mining companies, battery and semiconductor manufacturers, and global automotive groups focusing their product range on electric vehicles.
